Collection of American Windsor Chairs given to The American Village.
A beautiful collection of twelve classic American Windsor Chairs was recently donated to The American Village by Susanne and David Nichols of Birmingham. Windsor chairs were first developed in the late 17th century and were believed to be first introduced in America about 1726 by the Governor of the Pennsylvania colony. There are at least seven distinctive styles of these wooden chairs. While many English types were left in bare wood American chairs were usually painted. The chairs may be featured in The President's House at The American Village. This building is the only replica of the structure that exists as the original was demolished in 1834. The Philadelphia house is where both George Washington and John Adams resided during most of their respective Presidencies.
The President’s House is undergoing preparations for new programming and is not currently on public tour. Watch for additional details about its unveiling in the coming months.
