On Nobvember 5 the Youth Leadership Development Program – which involves 90+ schools, several schools systems and Birmingham area community colleges and universities –  held its annual awards program.
The Major General James E. Livingston Award for Patriotism honors the courageous service of Georgia-native and longtime USMC officer James Livingston, whose heroism and courage in combat while wounded was recognized by the President awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Two recipients were honored by the award this year:  Chancellor Jack Hawkins of Troy University, himself a combat USMC veteran of the Vietnam War; and Tom Walker, for his patriotic service in founding and establishing the American Village and its National Veterans Shrine, to teach and inspire young people.

Tour the National Veterans Shrine and Register of Honor

The National Veterans Shrine is patterned after Philadelphia's Carpenters Hall. The Shrine honors our veterans' service and sacrifice for America and its freedom. It features major sculpture and paintings by nationally-renowned artists. Interactive media, artifacts and exhibits will help answer the questions: "Who are our country's veterans?" "What did they do for our country?" and "What do we owe them?"

Housed within the Shrine is the Veterans Register of Honor, a website and database containing photographs, biographical sketches, and stories of America's veterans and active members of the United States Armed Forces.
