Because of the Brave 5K

Event Description The name of this event says it all… Because of the Brave!  We love this country and all of us enjoy the freedom of living in the United States of America.  However, the freedom we enjoy came at a price.  On Memorial Day 2025, come out and join us in an event that truly honors the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.  Because of the Brave 5K is truly about reflecting on this sacrifice that was made by so many of our heroes. These men and women carried their American flag and served our country with honor.  What better way to honor them, than to carry an American flag while running/walking a 5K?  As part of this event, each runner/walker will carry a 2’x 3’ American flag during the entire 5K course.  The flag will be affixed to a pole so it will be easy to carry.  The flag and pole together will be light so even children will be able to participate. This event is not about you and, therefore, is not a race.  You can run/walk at whatever pace you would like to, but this is not a timed 5K event. Because of the Brave 5K is being hosted by the American Village.  The Alabama National Cemetery next door to the American Village is the final resting place for thousands of our brave heroes.  A portion of your entry fee will be donated to both the Alabama National Cemetery and the American Village. Because of the Brave 5K starts at 7:00 AM.  This allows runners/walkers to finish the 5K and have plenty of time to visit the Alabama National Cemetery at 9:00 AM for their annual Memorial Day Service, and the American Village for their annual Memorial Day Celebration at 11:00 AM.  So, come out and run Because of the Brave 5K, visit the Alabama National Cemetery’s Memorial Day Service, the American Village Memorial Day Celebration, and enjoy the afternoon at American Village for a full day of honoring the fallen and fun with the family! Course Description The 5K course will wind throughout the beautiful grounds at American Village.  The course consists of a 1.55-mile loop and will be clearly marked with patriotic flags.  Runners/walkers must complete the loop twice to finish the course and complete the 5K distance.  The entire course will be on paved surfaces, so strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. Time and Location Memorial Day: Monday May 26, 2025 @ 7:00 AM Because of the Brave 5K will be held at American Village in Montevallo, Alabama. Runners will receive a 2’ x 3’American flag attached to a pole at packet pickup. We will also have a custom Because of the Brave 5K flag near the start/finish line.  Please come prepared to write the name of a hero or heroes that you will be running/walking the 5K in honor of.  This flag will come back annually at each future Because of the Brave 5K event and be on display during the run.  This, again, ensures we never forget the names of our heroes who died for this country. Swag All runners/walkers will receive a custom Because of the Brave 5K challenge coin at the finish line.  Runners/walkers will exchange the American flag they’ve carried during the 5K course for the challenge coin.  Challenge coins are commonly exchanged within the military.  Another way to honor the brave is to keep this tradition.  This challenge coin will be something you can take away from this event as a reminder of the freedom we have “Because of the Brave!”  There will be no awards given to the top finishers.  Again, this is not a race but rather an event to honor those brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Be sure to sign up by May 1st, 2025, to guarantee that you’ll receive the custom challenge coin. Aid Station We will provide one water station during the course at the start/finish line area.  Runners/walkers will be able to hydrate at the halfway point and at the finish line.  Fruit will also be provided at the finish line. Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington to relocate to American Village

Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington in Columbiana to be relocated to American Village East Wing of Independence Hall in Montevallo Founded in 1982 by Karl C. Harrison, a Columbiana banker and philanthropist, the Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington provided an important forum for learning about America’s first First Family. Through the foresighted efforts and encouragement of Martha Washington’s granddaughter, Eliza Parke Custis, family heirlooms have been lovingly passed down through generations. In the early 1980s, Shelby County resident Charlotte Smith-Weaver, a sixth generation granddaughter of Martha Washington, decided to share her legacy with the public, providing the basis of the museum. The Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington collection focuses on art and artifacts from the colonial period through 1865. The collection contains paintings, letters, furniture, porcelain, glassware, silver, jewelry, busts and more. Martha Washington’s prayer book printed in New York in 1783, an original 1787 Samuel Vaughn sketch of Mt. Vernon grounds, writing instruments and tools from George Washington’ s survey case, and an original tintype depicting Robert E. Lee in his uniform for the last time are just a few collection highlights. The beauty and craftsmanship of 18th and 19th century furniture is evidenced by a number of carefully preserved pieces from the estates of the Washington family and their descendants. Coin-silver utensils used at Mount Vernon, a 207-piece set of Minton porcelain and an exquisite pair of Sevres vases, circa 1785, from the estate of Augustine Washington, half-brother of George, highlight the display. One highly regarded piece is a walnut games table with tulip and rosewood inlay (circa 1805). The beautiful table belonged to Bushrod Washington, a direct descendant, who inherited Mount Vernon upon Martha’s death. The oldest item in the Museum is the handwritten will of Colonel Daniel Parke, dated 1710. His grandson, Daniel Parke Custis, married Martha Dandridge. After his death Martha married George Washington. “We are very excited to have this amazing collection coming to American Village.  The addition of the Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington to the American Village campus will expand our opportunities to allow students and citizens to engage in the study and appreciation of America’s founding history.” Alan B. Miller, President and CEO, American Village “The Karl C. Harrison Museum is an extraordinary collection of George Washington memorabilia.  Shelby County has been honored to be home of this collection since its inception and thanks to the Harrison family it will remain in Shelby County in a new home at the American Village. We all anticipate a bright future for the museum as it serves an even greater audience.”  Tom Walker, American Village Founder and President Emeritus ”I am extremely pleased to have this collection of Washington family heirlooms, which my family has lovingly passed from one generation to the next, find a new home at American Village. Our family’s wish was that the collection stay here in Shelby County, and we cannot think of a better steward of these items than American Village.” Helen Harrison Phillips, Daughter of Karl C. Harrison The Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington collection is estimated to be the largest collection of George and Martha Washington artifacts and memorabilia outside of their famous home site, Historic Mount Vernon. It will be housed in the East Wing of Independence Hall, soon to be under construction at American Village. The West Wing of Independence Hall at American Village opened in 2022, and the central portion of is slated to open in 2025. The East Wing, the third and final phase of the Independence Hall project, will be completed by July 4, 2026 – America’s 250th Birthday. American Village celebrates its own 25th anniversary this year, and is currently planning activities and events to mark the anniversary.   Pictured is just a small portion of the Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington collection, which includes Sevre porcelain vases, Martha Washington’s prayer book and letter box, Samuel Vaughn 1787 sketch of Mount Vernon grounds, George Washington coffin lining, shirt button and cuff link, and small oval print of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart.
